Air Scrubber

A Venturi air scrubber, also known as a Venturi scrubber, is a device designed to purify gas streams. It effectively uses the energy from a high-velocity inlet gas stream to atomize the liquid being used to scrub the gas stream. This technology is part of a group of air pollution controls collectively referred to as wet scrubbers.

A Venturi scrubber consists of three sections: a converging section, a throat section, and a diverging section. The inlet gas stream enters the converging section and, as the area decreases, gas velocity increases. Liquid is introduced either at the throat or at the entrance to the converging section. The inlet gas, forced to move at extremely high velocities in the small throat section, turbulently mixes with the liquid, producing a large number of very tiny droplets. Particle and gas removal occur in the diverging section as the inlet gas stream mixes with the fog of tiny liquid droplets.

Venturi scrubbers are often used as the first stage in a multi-stage pollution control system. They can handle large inlet flow rates at high temperatures, making them attractive for many industries. They are used to reduce particulate emissions in numerous applications. Venturi scrubbers can achieve very high particle removal efficiency, sometimes exceeding 99%. Their open internal configuration allows them to remove most particles without clogging or needing to change sizes.

In summary, Venturi scrubbers are a versatile and efficient solution for air pollution control. They are particularly desirable in industries where gas enters the scrubber at high temperatures, such as cement kilns and basic oxygen furnaces in the steel industry. Venturi scrubbers are also used to control emissions of fly ash and sulfur dioxide generated by industrial boilers and their devices.
